2020 Profit Sharing Pay Advices: Available in Payroll Advice

Profit sharing pay advices for Flight Attendants based at domestic locations are now available for viewing on Flying Together.  Profit sharing payments will be funded on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, through your normal payroll process (check or direct deposit). For Flight Attendants based at International locations, Profit Sharing Payments will be included as part of the regular payroll process and will be included on the February 28, 2020 on cycle pay advice.

Because the domestic Profit Sharing payments are separate from the regular payroll process, those check images have been prepared and can be viewed in the Pay Advice section of Employee Services.  Regular Pay Checks will be generate later in the month and once those are available, Flight Attendants from International locations will be able to see these payments.

Suspension of Service to Mainland China & HKG Extended

United announced on February 12th that the company will extend the suspension of service to mainland China and HKG, until April 24. This is a direct result of the reduction in demand for travel due to the ongoing issues with the Coronavirus.

We know this outbreak raises concerns for our members. Our Safety, Health and Security Committee continues to work closely with United and the CDC to monitor the rapidly changing situation.

As a reminder, Flight Attendants who recently visited China for work or personal travel may be subject to restrictions entering or staying in other countries while flying for work. You may view the current entry requirements and restrictions as well as the latest Coronavirus updates on Flying Together

Questions or concerns should be directed to your Local Safety, Health & Security Committee.

April Special COLAs Announced

On February 13, 2020, United management announced there would be an opportunity to offer one- and two-month Special Company Offered Leave of Absence (Special COLAs) effective for the April 2020 bid month. The company has not yet determined the number of Special COLAs that will be awarded.

Bidding closes at 0800 CT on Friday March 6, 2020. Flight Attendants having an interest in either or both of the one- and two-month Special COLAs should indicate their preference when submitting their bid. Flight Attendants who are successfully awarded one of the April Special COLA options will be required to complete any overlapping assignments into the April bid month.

Flight Attendants with a special COLA request on file may be considered for an award at any time prior to the start of the April bid month if slots are still available. Awards will be published before March 12, 2020.   Keep in mind, once a Special COLA is awarded, it cannot be rescinded.

Union First- Professional Standards (EAP)
EAP and Professional Standards Committee

Professional Standards is a component of AFA EAP. It exists to assist Flight Attendants in any area that affects professional conduct. We all must take personal responsibility for creating a cooperative, respectful work environment that is tolerant of different opinions. When conflict occurs, we must take it upon ourselves to address and make every effort to resolve it respectfully.

When issues are taken to management, essentially “reporting” on a fellow Flight Attendant or employee from another department, the consequences can unintentionally become severe for all parties involved. When a conflict or disagreement arises throughout the course of our workday or away from the line, we encourage the resolution of any disagreement by trying to discuss the specific behavior or area of contention with the individual(s) involved and working to find an acceptable solution. We recommend Flight Attendants approach each other and speak about the problem in a calm, non-threatening manner, out of the view of passengers. When emotions are high and nerves are fried it is sometimes best to wait to discuss the matter until both parties have had time to think more clearly.

When a resolution can be achieve leaving all parties satisfied, Professional Standards is there to confidentially assist in conflict resolution. Your AFA EAP Representative can help you to work through conflicts and avoid “writing up” a fellow Flight Attendant or other employee. This protects all parties involved from potential disciplinary ramifications resulting from an investigation triggered by a report.

EAP Representatives are trained to handle Professional Standards issues and are there to support their fellow Flight Attendants. When you contact Professional Standards, a Representative will listen to your concerns and will follow up on the situation and pursue the appropriate action necessary. Confidentiality is the cornerstone of AFA’s EAP Committee. Because of this, representatives will not report back to you concerning conversations with other parties involved or any recommendations that were made during follow-up conversations.

What is a Line Observer Safety Audit (LOSA)?
Safety, Health & Security Committee

AFA, ALPA, United and LOSA Collaborative are about to begin a joint Line Observation Safety Audit (LOSA).  LOSA is a peer-to-peer observation which takes place during normal operations by line Flight Attendants. It is the most premiere, proactive safety management tool available in the industry. LOSA data is collected by Flight Attendants and securely transmitted to an outside company known as LOSA Collaborative who will assess Flight Attendant procedures to recommend improvements in safety to United Airlines and the respective Unions.

The goal of the program is to view unaltered behaviors and gain an accurate reading of how work is being accomplished during normal operations and make safety improvements for all of us. It is designed as a voluntary non-threatening, non-punitive, peer-to-peer observational process with a focus on the procedure and not the Flight Attendant. Peers are trained by the LOSA collaborative group. LOSA Collaborative will receive encrypted, transmitted data directly from observers for analysis and they will produce a final report for United, AFA and ALPA.  Flight numbers, names or dates are NOT part of the data collected and the program follows all the ALPA contract provisions required for LOSA projects.

Observation flights will begin as early as mid-March. We encourage you to welcome observers whose work is intended to enhance your safety at work. Learn more about the LOSA program by contacting your Local Council or by following the hyper link below.

“Today, we have the protection of a union contract — something millions of Americans want.” said Joanne Churchill, AFA GoJet Airlines President. “We look forward to implementing our first contract and realizing the improvements in pay and work rules. Congratulations to my flying partners at GoJet Airlines and to all of aviation's first responders in AFA who supported us and made this achievement possible.”

Government Affairs

FlightPAC is the Association of Flight Attendants Political Action Committee (PAC). It is funded by the voluntary contributions of eligible AFA members. FlightPAC enables us, as a Union, to offer support to political candidates to federal office who are committed to helping improve Flight Attendant safety, security and health, and our legislative priorities.

We stand strong with over 25,000 Flight Attendants. Currently, less than half our membership contributes to support our initiatives in Washington. As we prepare for an extremely important election, it is more vital than ever that every eligible member contribute to FlightPAC. No amount is too great or too small and every penny goes to ensure our Flight Attendant driven initiatives are at the forefront of our elected officials mind when they go to vote in Washington.

FlightPAC is non-partisan and independent. We support candidates and elected officials who support Flight Attendants!  If you do not currently contribute to FlightPAC and would like to learn how to do so, please contact your Local Government Affairs Committee, or download a payroll deduction form and drop it off at your local office or mail to:

Customs Pre-clearance Procedural Changes

Those locations having customs pre-clearance prior to arrival into the US, such as Canada, you may see additional screening for some passengers. Some but not all may be selected for a secondary screening, based on previous individual travel. This does not mean, nor should this be interpreted, these individuals have traveled to China.   As Flight Attendants we need to understand what is expected of us.

When this selection happens before a flight departure, you will be handed the passenger documents that are to be secured and passed off to CBP on arrival at the destination of the flight.

If the selection takes place during the flight, on arrival a CBP officer may meet your flight and request certain passenger(s) see them on the jetway. This is the same process used today with the exception that we will be holding some passenger documents to better identify the passenger to CBP. These passengers are not to be detained by us.  If no one meets the flight, it is expected that we will return their documents upon deplaning. Additional information can be found on in the CPB article on our website
